What is The Best Platform to Make a Blog in 2026?
This is exciting. Blogs are back. And there is no better time to get one up and running whether you just want to write it for yourself, or you want to start a brand or company.
The goal here is making a blog that is easily accessible, readable, easy to update and customize, and one that is easy to use. We want to make sure we make a blog that is worth visiting and that we can optimize to drive traffic and visitors to, so you can have readers and subscriptions.
So what are our options for the best platforms for blogging in 2026?
The popular platforms that I think are best in 2026 for blogging include –
WordPress – one of the original blog platforms that have been widely used and still is used
Substack – this one has gained a lot of traction and popularity
Medium – I think this one is still pretty popular and I will probably start using it soon (I used to use it for another blog – I’ll start a new one.
I am not going to recommend any others because I don’t think certain sites are blogs (except maybe Wix), and the others I am not familiar with. If you think there are better options or you have heard of others that have better features, then by all means, try them out if you want.
How to Choose the Right Blog Platform?
There are a variety of factors that you should consider when choosing a blog platform. All of the factors are not equal and it really depends what you are looking for.
For WordPress, people will tell you this is the best option if you want full control. That is true. But it also cost money because you will be running your own host server and you will likely either set it up yourself or hire someone to set it up for you. Using WordPress is not difficult, it becomes easier over time but a quick guide can give you a tour of everything pretty quickly.
Substack is a great option because it is free to set up and it offers a subscription option for readers and subscribers, if you want to offer a premium option for some or all of your writings. With Substack, you have to grow an audience primarily through your own channels and sharing and many have done so successfully.
Medium is a great option if you want to create a blog that people can also subscribe to. It’s pretty straight forward to use. This platform is more like a standalone blog like wordpress (except WordPress can also be a website with a blog), while Substack is more like a newsletter that has articles on a social media platform and sends emails to your subscribers with your writings and links to them when you publish.
I personally like Substack the best, because it is very straight forward and reminds me of a social media platform, so the user interface is familiar. But I do have some issues that I think are worth mentioning that I will highlight below.
Revenue and Money Earning Options from Blog Platforms
All of these options offer opportunities to earn revenue and money from the blogs. You can use affiliate links as one way if you have anything to recommend.
Then on WordPress you can sell products and services. You can probably also find a subscription plugin if you wanted to create a membership style blog to earn income.
With Substack it’s a little more straight forward. Substack takes a 10% cut from your subscriptions. You get to set the rates for different packages. It’s really simple. It seems to be working and this is how Substack earnings money.
With Medium, it earns from people reading your blog. To earn income on your blog you have to join the partner program, which means you pay a small fee, and then the pool of cash in the pool from blogs is split between people that run Medium blogs based on the amount of time they spend on a certain blog. So your earnings are shared in a way and based on my gemini search, 94% of blog owners make around $100 per month.
So earning potential is higher with Substack maybe, than Medium. But you have to find subscribers and of those subscribers, you have to have people that are willing and able to be paid subscribers.
Which Is the Best Platform Between WordPress, Substack, and Medium?
I would say Substack. Although I think most will recommend WordPress, especially people that make WordPress tutorials. But there is a reason why.
Substack is easy to set up, run and use.
WordPress is a little more complex but gets easier as you use it and it’s really popular.
The reason why people may recommend WordPress over Substack for blogging is because they are likely to want to recommend a host provider or hosting service for you to use to sign up and create your WordPress blog with. They will earn an affiliate commission from doing this. So what does that mean?
It means that the recommendations for WordPress as the best blogging platform over Substack may not be genuine. This won’t always be the case but sometimes. You just have to know that people usually have an incentive to recommend something to you, especially online and when there are affiliate links and affiliate commissions available.
I still think Substack is the better option. For 2026, Substack is easy to use, easy to navigate, and if you are a good writer and can grow an audience, you will find people willing to pay and subscribe to your blog substack. And best of all, they are already on the platform where they are seeking out writings like yours. Unlike WordPress where you may need to optimize your website and be found in search engines and chatbots.
Medium is also a good option but again, rather than say more than necessary, I would go with Substack.
I don’t think there is an affiliate link for Substack and they likely do not have an affiliate program. If they do, I will update my own links to Substack for them, so be aware. But truthfully, I have used, I do use, and I recommend Substack because I think it’s the best blogging platform for 2026.
