The first thing we have to do to get our real estate website up and running with WordPress is get hosting.
What is the benefit of having your own web hosting?
- Hosting lets you manage and run your own website
- You can use hosting from other platforms but they can control your data and your site and can shut it down if they want to
- Hosting is like owning your home (or at least an apartment)
- Not hosting your site is like being an employee that can be fired at any time
- You can customize your server however you want with hosting
- You are more in control with hosting
Where to go for web hosting for WordPress?
There are a few places you can go for web hosting.
We use Hostinger and think they are one of the best wordpress hosting options
You can also use Hostgator which is a very popular option that has been around for a long time and is trusted by many
If you want to use a web hosting options where you don’t have to manage everything then WordPress.com is a good choice
You can also use SquareSpace but that is a different CMS (content management system).
Step #1: Get Hosting
As stated above, there are a lot of reasons to host your own website.
- Go to Hostinger
- Choose a plan (the premium plan is usually good enough)
- With 12 months or more you get a free domain
- Use the coupon code SUPER10
- Once you sign up, we’ll install WordPress and register the domain in the next step!
Step #2: Install WordPress and Register Domain
- In this next step, we just go through the installation process for WordPress.
- All I had to do was put in my email, create a password, and just click next a few times.
- I selected Other for the type of website I am making
- And I deselected the recommended plugins since the Houzez Theme will recommend the ones we need for the real estate website with WordPress.
- Then I used a domain I already had registered but you can create a new one or even use one from another place like GoDaddy.
If you are using a GoDaddy domain, I’ll show you how to connect it in another tutorial so go ahead and use it here.
Now we just have to wait for WordPress to install and onto the next step.
Step #3: Houzez Theme for WordPress
With WordPress set up, getting the Houzez theme is the next thing to do.
We want to download the correct files, install it, and activate it. After that we can create our real estate website with WordPress and learn how to use the Houzez Theme.
- Go to the Houzez Theme website
- Check out
- Then download all files and documetation
- Also download the license code
- Now we can go back to the WordPress website
Step #4: Activate Houzez Theme for Real Estate
Once you install and activate the Houzez theme, you’ll want to copy and paste in the purchase code you have so you can activate the theme for updates and install the premium plugins that come with it.
Step #5: Choose Your Real Estate Website Template
To choose a real estate website template for your WordPress website do the following ->
- Go to the WordPress dashboard
- Hover over Houzez Theme
- Click on Demo Import
- Choose the template you want to use for your WordPress Real Estate Directory Website
- We use the Houzez05 template for our tutorial
Once we import the real estate listing template we want to use, we can look at the entire website and figure out what we want to change, That’s what I do in the next steps.
Step #6: Create Real Estate Agencies
I could have gone in a number of directions with the real estate website and what to do first but I figure, since it’s a real estate website, the best thing is to focus on real estate agents and the agencies.
First, to create a real estate agency, you can look at the demo content to see how they are made.
- In the WordPress dashboard
- Hover over Real Estate
- Click on Agencies
- This is where you can go to put in information about a new real estate agency you want to make for your WordPress website
- The description…contact information…and even logo and image about the agency
- Click publish once you are ready
Step #7: Create Real Estate Agents
Similar to creating real estate agencies, you can create real estate agents by doing the same steps
- Follow the steps from creating agencies
- Except this time, click on agents, instead of agencies
- And you can put in the information you want for a real estate agent
- You can connect them to any agency you make in the right side by drop down
- Under agency
- Click save/publish once you are ready
Step #8: Customize the Homepage
Now that we know how to make agencies and agents, we can learn how to customize and edit the homepage using the elementor page builder.
The elementor page builder might look overwhelming at the start but it’s pretty easy to use after you practice with it. This is just my opinion though and I know it might take some time for others. It gets easier though the more you use it!
To turn on the elementor page builder for any of your pages
- Go to the WordPress Dashboard
- Hover over pages > Click on All Pages
- Click to edit with Elementor or click edit and then click on the edit with Elementor button
Writing everything about the elementor page builder would be very time consuming so I recommend the video tutorials we’ve made to see how it works. You can also check out any other video tutorial showing how the elementor page builder works so you can create a real estate website with wordpress.
Just drag and drop any section or module
Use the tabs on the left to edit the section and widget
Create new sections by clicking on the + in the middle or importing any templates.
If you want to use the elementor pro plugin you can always upgrade.
- Adding properties and editing them is easy. Just use the Houzez elements
- Add fields in the real estate tab in your WordPress dashboard and choose whatever style you want!
Step #9: Edit Title Section
When you go to the edit page for any pages for the WordPress real estate website, you can scroll down to the bottom and you’ll see a page header option.
- In the drop down, you can choose the style of header you want.
- For the real estate website template using the Houzez theme, it’s normally “none”, “elementor” or “image”
- You can choose any option you want
- Then click preview or save to check out what it looks like
- Choose what’s best for you
- Also, for the search bar function, you can turn that off by going into the right side by on the edit page
There is a drop down you can switch from global / default to custom
Step #10: Editing Other Pages
For the about page and the contact page for the real estate website, we do the same steps to edit the page as the homepage.
- Go to the WordPress dashboard
- Hover over all pages
- Click on Edit
- Click on the page we want to edit
- We can edit the header / title area
- Turn on the elementor page builder
- And edit
The main difference for these pages is the contact form
If you want to edit the contact form on the contact page for the real estate website, just click the module and add whatever fields you want
Step #11: Create Blog Posts
To create blog posts for the real estate website, you can go back to the WordPress dashboard
- Hover over posts
- And click to add new
- Then customize the blog posts and add categories
- To add a featured image, do so on the right hand side
- Click publish when you’re ready!
Step #12: Theme Options
The theme options for the Houzez theme is very detailed!
What the theme options do is it allows you to customize different parts of your website, including the colors, font styles, spacing and the layouts.
Click on the tabs to know what you can do for each option.
Make sure you click save if you make any changes!
Step #13: Header Menu
To edit the header menu, go back to the wordpress dashboard for the real estate website and the houzez theme
- Hover over the appearance tab
- Click on menus
- Here you’ll see the demo menu that comes with the houzez theme
- You can edit that header menu or delete it and create your own using the pages as navigation links from the real estate website with wordpress
- Select or make sure the location for the menu is the primary menu if it’s for the header
- Click save and you’re good to go
You can always edit the menu whenever you feel like updating it.
I kept most of the header menu as is since it list out a lot of the important pages that I would probably have on my own website if I had a real estate agency or listing website, so I didn’t make a lot of changes for this section.
Step #14: Create Properties
I think creating properties is really similar to creating agencies and agents, the only difference being that you can put in fields like cities and whether the property is for rent or for sale or any other option.
The fields are a little different and you can fill them out based on whatever information you have for the property. If you have any questions about it, feel free to ask.
For the gallery, you’ll want to go to the media tab and add some images.

Additional Houzez Theme Tips
- Play around with the Houzez theme elements. There are a bunch of different layout options.
- Collapse the elements tabs if you want to go down to the more basic elements of elementor.
- The theme options is your friend and you can change a lot of the default settings there.
- If you need to customize some settings for a specific page, make sure you try scrolling down the edit page or check out the settings on the right hand side bar for the page tab.
